Nitrogen Fixing Trees
Nitrogen-fixing trees can boost the growth and productivity of everything else in your landscape by converting atmospheric nitrogen into forms plants can use. Synthetic nitrogen fertilizers have a significant environmental footprint and we can expect them to only get more expensive. To completely remove the need to bring in nitrogen from off site while maintaining high productivity, a considerable area needs to be dedicated to nitrogen fixing plants. Abundant scotch broom or red alder, both being nitrogen fixers, are likely indicating the need for more available nitrogen in your landscape.
Paulownia, also called empress tree or princess tree, is an exceptionally fast growing hardwood and nitrogen fixer. It also has beautiful summer blooms. It is only marginally cold hardy for us in Merville, although we have a neighbour with a large well established tree. Protection from any cold snaps in their first few years is a good idea.
Black Locust is very hardy and is one of the fastest growing trees on our farm. These trees have little thorns so gloves are recommended for planting!
